How to Step Away From Stagnation
Pastor Bill McBride
In my short time here as your pastor I have quickly come to understand how much you all love your Church family. It really doesn’t matter where you worship whether at Marinette, Peshtigo or Harmony; in fact some of you worship around at one of the three buildings other than your own, depending on what time you get up on Sunday or if you have Sunday plans away and want to go to church at a different time. One hidden benefit of three connected churches led by one pastor.
It didn’t take me long to realize that you all want the same thing. We all, your pastor and Julie
and you included want the Church family you belong to, to be strong, healthy and vital. I bet you really want to leave a legacy of your church being around and strong for a long time to come. Right?
Well, if that is to happen, we all must “Step Away From Stagnation.” There is no time like now to do this before it is too late. I hope you read page 1 of the newsletter.
Erwin M. Soukup compiled a list he calls “The Seven Steps to Stagnation.” You have no doubt heard these statements before. Most of us have said them! They are:
1. We’ve never done it that way before.
2. We’re not ready for that.
3. We are doing all right without trying that.
4. We tried it once before.
5. We don’t have money for that.
6. That’s not our job.
7. Something like that can’t work.
I also like to call these the “Seven Last Words (sentences) of a Doomed Church.”
Not only is it my calling as your pastor to remind you of your reality, but to help you behave
proactively so that your church continues to grow from the inside out and have a lasting
IMPACT on the people you connect with.
I call us all to think about the IMPACT our church has and can have if we choose to make a
difference. Congregations never decline by accident or by some magic event happening to
them. Congregations decline, struggle and fade away by choice not by chance.
So I am calling you all if you are reading this to do somethings and make a difference in your
church and for your mission to “go into the world and make disciples for the transformation of the world.”
On Wednesday August 21st at 6:00pm I will lead an information gathering session at the
Marinette church for our three congregations to consider embracing how we might make an
IMPACT in our own unique settings.
